Chaperones/Drivers Wanted for our Montpelier field trip on Tuesday, June 1 – let me know!

Here’s the latest news from Grade Four:

Math
This week in our fractions and decimals unit, students will continue making connections between decimals, fractions, mixed numbers, and money units.  We will have several activities and math games that focus on specific skills and concepts in this area.

Reading/Language Arts
This week, as we return to Junior Great Books, we will read the folk tale “The Man With The Wen,” a story about a Japanese charcoal burner who is ashamed of his appearance until he meets some very interesting friends.  Students will take directed notes on the text and develop interpretive questions for our shared inquiry discussion later in the week.

Writing
Fourth graders are working actively on their fairy tales this week.  I’m glad to see students using specific details, strong adjectives, and interesting characters and dialogue to make their writing shine!

Social Studies and Technology
We had to skip technology last week because of our NECAP science testing, so this week students will continue working with data and graphing with Microsoft Excel.  In Social Studies, we will continue adding important events to our Vermont History timeline as they come up in our readings.

Students are expected to complete the following homework:
  • READING: THREE nights of silent reading, at least 20 minutes per night. Students are responsible for having a parent or guardian sign their READ TO SUCCEED sheets, which will be collected on Friday.
  • WRITING: Home journals will be returned Tuesday.  Students are expected to write TWO journal entries this week.  Each entry should begin with that day’s date, and students should write each night for 15 minutes.  Journals are due Friday.
  • MATH: Each student is expected to complete THREE fact sheets by Friday.  Students have a choice of multiplication, addition, or subtraction practice sheets.
As always, please feel free to contact me if you ever have any questions or concerns.

NOTICE: The pizza this Friday is made with homemade pizza dough from our very own bread oven.  Thank you to parents Steve and Julie Parker and teacher Tammy Russell for all the dedication with making Brandon’s Bread Oven part of our school.
